Urotherapy focuses on issues such as bladder and bowel control problems, constipation, and chronic pain management. It is also commonly used after childbirth and cancer treatments.
Urotherapy is suitable for clients of all ages.
At the urotherapist’s consultation
During the consultation, the urotherapist carefully assesses the client’s situation through discussion. Supplementary questionnaires may be used to clarify how the symptoms affect the client’s daily life.
At the consultations, clients learn to identify their pelvic floor muscles. Training includes relaxation exercises, for example using breathing techniques, and specific pelvic floor muscle exercises. Training often also considers other muscles and tissues, including manual therapy, stretching, and strengthening exercises.
Pelvic floor function can also be measured using biofeedback with vaginal or anal electrodes. This provides numerical feedback on how the pelvic floor muscles are functioning. The measurements are particularly helpful for recognizing relaxation and for practicing targeted pelvic floor activation, for example while walking or lifting objects.
