What is Spiral Stabilization?
Spiral Stabilization (SPS) is a body control and therapy method aimed at achieving well-supported yet free movement of the spine. When the spine functions freely, the mobility of the hips, shoulders, and neck also improves.
SPS strengthens and relaxes muscles
SPS training is based on strengthening the spiral muscle chains and relaxing and elongating the vertical muscle chains. This creates space between the vertebrae, reducing pressure on the intervertebral discs and increasing their metabolism.
The long back extensors, neck muscles, hip flexors, and hamstrings are often tense and tight. When the spiral lines are activated, these tight vertical lines relax. Spiral Stabilization activates those muscles you should always use when you walk, run, perform daily tasks, or exercise.
How is Spiral Stabilization practiced in practice?
The exercises use resistance bands designed specifically for the method. The resistance is very light, but after a few repetitions, you can feel your posture improving and the small muscles engaging. During the exercises, the body is lengthened upward through the active use of spiral muscle chains.
The exercises are performed mainly standing, but they can also be adapted to sitting positions—for example, for wheelchair users.
Who is the SPS method suitable for?
Spiral Stabilization is suitable for most people. It is particularly beneficial for:
- Prevention and treatment of various types of back pain and disorders (acute and chronic back pain, scoliosis, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis)
- Pre- and postoperative rehabilitation following back surgery
- Improving functional capacity of the spine
- Pre- and postoperative treatment of joint problems (shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle joints)
- Improving body control and balance
- Improving walking technique and coordination
- Sports training
- Body maintenance
- Wheelchair users
What are the benefits of SPS for its practitioners?
- Improved posture and better muscle balance
- Better walking technique and coordination — walking becomes more restorative as the spine and hips move more freely
- Improved functional capacity of the spine — unnecessary pains and aches are reduced
- Athletes from various disciplines have discovered its benefits and incorporated it into their training
- Effective in preventing and treating different types of back pain and conditions; also an excellent method for treating scoliosis
- A safe and beneficial way to improve body control and balance — also suitable for older adults
