Clinic Dog Crema Detects Pain

Orton’s clinic dog, Crema, has been trained to detect pain through human biomarkers. With her highly sensitive nose, the dog can sense changes in the body associated with pain even before the person becomes aware of it.

The clinic dog assists in designing effective non-medication-based pain management methods. The dog acts like a sensor and continues signaling until a working non-pharmaceutical method is found. Crema also gladly participates in active exercises during appointments—limited only by imagination.

Crema’s education

Crema began her life as a guide dog puppy in a guide dog school, which provided an excellent foundation for her work as a clinic dog. In spring 2023, Crema successfully passed the suitability test for the program Koirat kasvatus- ja kuntoutustyössä ry (Dogs in Educational and Rehabilitation Work).

Orton and the University of Helsinki are conducting joint research into how clinic dog appointments affect patients’ functionality and quality of life.

Appointments

Dog Crema works at Orton on Wednesdays and Fridays. She is paired with physiotherapist Juulia Turunen. You can book an appointment with Crema dog and Juulia Turunen via email at: juulia.turunen@orton.fi

Each session lasts 60 minutes, with approximately 30 minutes of active work with the dog. The remaining time is spent working with the physiotherapist.

Treatment Periods

Initial sessions with the clinic dog can be scheduled on a trial basis. If the client benefits, a longer treatment plan can be developed.

At the beginning of the treatment period, goals are jointly defined and monitored throughout the sessions. At the end, a summary is made of the completed treatment and a follow-up plan is created.

Price

The price for a 60-minute appointment with the clinic dog and physiotherapist is €137.40. This includes the physiotherapist’s fee, the dog supplement, and the service fee.
