Professional interests

Pain conditions and related client work, as well as pain research, have been my professional interests since the beginning of my career nearly 30 years ago. In my work as a pain psychologist, I am interested in combining recent scientific research with client work. This way, it is possible to create thinking and action models that serve treatment and rehabilitation goals. Before interventions, I aim to gather the most comprehensive and holistic understanding of the client’s nature, experiences, and symptoms.

My clients also include individuals who experience psychological symptoms, stress, anxiety, and depression, ranging from children to the elderly.

In integrative psychotherapy, the starting point is the client’s individual therapeutic needs and goals, which psychotherapy aims to address. The methods used are selected, and therapy is tailored from the start according to the client’s needs and preferences. Integrative psychotherapy emphasizes the common factors across various types of psychotherapy that most influence therapy outcomes, such as a good therapeutic relationship and the expectation of a positive outcome, according to research.

The fundamental task of psychotherapy is to increase the client’s self-awareness and strengthen their sense of agency, leading to an expansion of self-understanding and an increase in the sense of control, as well as better regulation of their own emotions and actions.

Therapeutic work can, if necessary, include hypnosis or body-psychotherapeutic methods if it serves the client’s needs and the therapy process.

Psychotherapy can be reimbursed by Kela with a B-medical statement from a psychiatrist.

Levels 1 and 2 fascial manipulation

I graduated as a physiotherapist in 2002 at the University of Applied Sciences in Rovaniemi. At the time, I already knew that, within the extensive field of physiotherapy, I would focus on the area of my main interest – musculoskeletal problems. My desire to find out the cause of patients’ symptoms led me into continued education immediately after my graduation; I first trained in the basics of manual therapy and then studied OMT (3.5 years). I have also gained qualifications in acupuncture and fascial manipulation (Levels 1 and 2). I regularly participate in continued education.

Special interests

Rather than treating symptoms, I focus on finding out the cause of the problem and addressing it. I am interested in functional problems and consider them to be the area in which a physiotherapist’s skills and know-how are at their strongest. I am particularly interested in hip/lower extremity and neck/upper extremity problems, joint problems, temporomandibular disorders and strain-related symptoms.

I am fortunate to work at Orton, an institution that allows me to work with similarly minded colleagues and favours multidisciplinary collaboration. Collaboration with colleagues and specialists leads to effective treatment with good outcomes.

Special interests

I became interested in biomechanics and human physiology because of my strong background in sports. My physiotherapy education served as a basis for my specialisation. I am still interested in issues at the margins of medicine, human performance capacity, rehabilitation, movement and pain, the perception of illness and psychological issues. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the specialty that provides the best opportunities to address these areas. I am also interested in pain management and symptom control.
