Joint Replacement Hospital Orton will begin operations on 1 April 2026

Orton will begin operations on 1 April 2026 as HUS’s own joint replacement hospital. As a result of the change, Orton will focus on joint replacement surgery and serve patients in public health care.

Orton’s objective is to improve HUS patients’ access to joint replacement surgery and to strengthen joint replacement surgery services. Orton’s activities are based on more than 50 years of experience in joint replacement surgery and treatment results that are among the best in the field.

“Orton has a strong tradition in joint replacement surgery, since Finland’s first total hip replacement surgery was performed here already in 1967. The change will enable us to make our expertise more accessible,” says Mikko Manninen, Head Clinician at Orton.

Orton’s CEO Mika Paavola says the change will respond to the increased need for joint replacement surgery and shorten patient queues.

“We are gradually expanding our operations to achieve an annual level of approximately 9,000 joint replacement operations. Our task is to provide effective and safe treatment and improve the health and quality of life of thousands of people in the coming years,” says Paavola.

Orton will continue operations in Ruskeasuo, Helsinki. You can access treatment through HUS and get a referral from a health centre, a public hospital or a private medical clinic.

Pain and back clinics end

Orton can no longer offer private appointments, which means that the activities of the pain and back clinics end on 31 March 2026. The closure of the pain clinic has understandably raised concerns among customers and questions about further treatment.

Orton’s pain outpatient clinic has not been part of the public service system. Orton’s management began negotiating the future of the pain clinic as soon as the decision on Orton’s transformation into a joint replacement hospital was made in January 2026. The continuation of operations was examined with several parties, but unfortunately no solution was found.

We are sorry that we cannot direct the customers of the pain clinic to a fully comparable private service provider, but chronic pain management services are available from other private health service providers.

HUS Group’s pain management operations will continue unchanged. HUS pain management reception is responsible for the specialised medical care of pain patients in Uusimaa, i.e. consultations and multidisciplinary assessments, after which treatment continues in primary health care.
